Privacy Protection Plus is a fraud

Be aware, Free Credit Reports in Canada and many other similar named web sites offer a free credit report, but once you sign up for Privacy Protection Plus, you only get a 2$ discount at Equifax for which you don't need to sign up, just use this link: https://www.econsumer.equifax.ca/ca/main?link=MWC&lang=en . You also get a "gift certificate coupon" for TransUnion, but when you go through the process at TransUnion, it says "you have selected credit monitoring for $24.95" or something like that, so it's not free either. Nothing like what is advertised.

And their toll free phone number (the Privacy Protection Plus one) is just a message telling you to go online so you can't even cancel. To actually talk to someone, you have to call a different toll free number, the one I found on the contact page of freecreditreportsincanada.com: 1-800-508-2597.

All in all, a huge waste of time, and I'm sure many people don't find out how to cancel so they get charged for a useless website. I call that a scam.

Comments:
thank you so much for that number everytime i called the original number i was told to enter either a credit card number, my "membership" number or go online. its nice to have an acttual number to call! lol

Wow, call me stupid, but I have been paying for 6 months and never noticed. Called the number and they graciously canceled, and told me a complete refund for all installments will show up on my CC within 72 business hours. Too good to be true?

slouch

that number is TransUnion, the parent company. Here's Privacy Protection Plus's number 1-866-444-1837

OK I am another sucker. I can't stand a company that pulls such tactics. The phone number that showed up on my VISA was 1-888-999-0535. I am posting this in case they keep changing their phone numbers. The number worked and "Justin" says that they have cancelled my membership.

I am also a victim of this company. I have called them and was told that they will issue me refund within 2 to 3 business days. I am desperately waiting for this.

there is a 'I want to cancel' button on the first page of 'cancelation' tab

I too was scammed - signed up for Classmates.com - and I remember being offered Privacy Protection - said no - but anyway the bill comes on my AMEX account for two months -and not only did they charge me 19.95 for Privacy Protection - they also charged me $19.95 for 24 hr Assistance!!! x 4!!! My AMEX rep in the dispute Inquiry Dept called with me on the phone as a 3 way call - and they promptly dropped and refunded all charges. SCAM SCAM SCAM

And guess what>>>>> the phone number 888-999-0535 is the same for both company's. Coincidence?
These company's prey on people who do not speak up - have a voice!!! Charge!!!

I just got had by them. Found out Trans Union was going to charge me for he credit report and went back to PPP to cancel Of course I already forgot my member ID, the 'save ID' checkbox didn't work and they didn't email me a single thing, and I don't trust them to email me back promptly with help. I'll be calling that number first thing tomorrw morning to cancel.

I got had by them too. I just did a Google search and found out they were a fraud. I called to cancel my 'coverage' and after reading the comments, I see I won't be getting my refund. So frustrating how a company like this can get away with stealing money from people.

This is so ridiculous how this place can get away with this. I too had the number 1-888-999-0535 on my credit card. I too had been paying for months and never noticed. Its scarey what they are capable of doing and to have access to our credit cards....the cc companies should perhaps put a stop to this.

Here is their email address. Forward any comments to this company. They are a SCAM!!!

In Canada, Privacy Protection Plus is one of a group of companies umbrella'd by Memberworks Canada. I finally reached Memberworks at 1-1-402-661-2000 after riding the toll-free numbers to their predictably dead ends. Memberworks Canada knew exactly what I was talking about, and immediately agreed to cancel my "membership" and reverse the credit card charges.

The name "Privacy Protection" appears to have been changed. It is now "Credit Adaptor". Same price, same deceptive practices. I suspect they had to switch names because a google search of Privacy Protection Plus leads to more information than Memberworks Canada wants you to have.

Hey everyone, the last post (Memberworks at 1-1-402-661-2000 )does get you to a persone and they say the will credit what ever you have already paid (we'll see). Make sure to ask for the cancellation reference number.

I renewed my classmates.com account using my visa....1st mistake. I don't recall being asked about any Privacy Protection or 24hr assistance. Just received this months bill and that I was being billed 19.95 for Privacy Proctection and another 19.95 for 24hr assistance. I called my credit card comp they couldnt help me as it is Sunday. I tried contacting the company Privacy Proctection and again they are closed. I can't go online cuz I dont have a username and password....what a scam....I tried contacting Classmates and that was hopeless as I am not impressed with their underhanded techniques how dare they allow another company to have access to my personal info and especially my credit card info....ya I am P..O'd and will be dealing with this first thing in the morning. Then i will be cancelling my credit card

call the number, then select the option "How is the membership works?", then you can talk to some one to cancell the membership.

keep your fingers crossed for me I have am new to owning a credit card and was thinking that it was my bank each month taking the payment finally after 2 and a half years (stupid me) called visa to complain to find out I was scamed and frauded someone used my credit card and fake email this company is from texas I live in canada!!!! their call center number is 1-888-999-0535 beware they are rude but say they will be rehinbursting my credit card after i threatened visa on them for fraud I will wait to see it they repay the 420 back to me....what kills me the most every year they raised the rates and yet never notified me grrrrr I have canceled my mebership!

question i just called to cancel my account which i was scamed into... has anyone actually recieved back their full money on their credit card? am I going to have to place a fraud on this company? they took me for 420.51 and I want my money back! they say all charges will be replaced will they actually do this?

I was charged $29.95 for a period of nine months (totaling $269.55.)

I contacted my credit card company who told me to call the 1-888 number attached to the "privacy protection" name on my bill; there, I put in my phone number (probably a very bad idea, I know) and eventually spoke to a representative who (ironically) informed me that she is part of the billing department and cannot help me. She was exceptionally rude (and admittedly, I was tempermental) but she advised me to call the 1-866 number, where I was put on hold numerous times and couldn't get through to anyone.
Then I followed the advice written here and called back and didn't press anything - I finally reached a person to speak to. He was unfriendly and unhelpful, and transferred to me another person clearly in Southern US from her accent - Vanessa.

This time I decided to be polite. Vanessa was very helpful and agreed to cancel my membership and refund me. I specifically asked what payments were going to be refunded, and she said that it would be for this month only. After I (politely) expressed disapproval, she agreed to refund me for 2 months; when I again said that I wanted a full refund for all eight months, she said that it was not possible unless I spoke to a supervisor, so I requested to do just that.

The supervisor (Kathy) gave a similar, very-polite runaround, where she would offer to refund me three months payment, and when I said there were more payments she went back 6 months, and when I said there were more than that and that she must check her records and refund me for the totality of the payment she eventually admitted that there were 9 months worth of payments and that she would refund them all. She provided me again with her name and a confirmation number. She said my bank would receive confirmation of the refund within two business days, and that the money would be there in 3-5.

So. The lesson here is to:

Call the 1-866-444-1837 number;

DON'T follow any directions - just stay on the line and wait for a human to answer;

Repeatedly request a FULL refund and make sure that you know exactly how many months and to the day you have been charged the fee, and how much it was - DON'T presume that if they offer you a refund they are referring to the entire amount, ask questions and be specific.

Ask to speak to a supervisor and don't let up until you do!

Finally, BE POLITE. Your pleases and thank-yous and polite temperament don't make you a wuss, it makes people more likely to want to help you out.

Good luck everybody, this is such a hassle. Thanks for all the tips, I would have been lost without this blogpost.

I was another victim. VISA is cancelling the charge, which gets me off the hook. In addition, i'm filing a formal fraud report with VISA.

It's probably more trouble than it's worth just for me, but they're probably ripping off a lot of people. Somebody needs to scream.

I was had too. Luckily, I figured this out early and called to cancel my membership and they confirmed that I had. Here's hoping it works out...

Okay- add one more person to the 'I have been totally freaking scammed list'. I only got billed twice before I realized what these as.h.l.s were doing- I was polite but they did not agree to refund the charges that had already occured. Does the better buissness bureau know about this scandal? As Canadians we are supposed to be entitled to a "free credit report"- so how do they get away with this crap?!?

The sad thing is, I'm trying to repair my credit and in the process of trying to obtain my credit report, this company takes advantage and causes charges to appear that I wasn't aware of until it was too late and gave me negative posts to my report.

August 15, 2011. I too have been fraudulently violated. Their company's name is both Ironic and Hypocritical. The name should be Invaders of Privacy Plus. I have emailed them from the email provided by someone previously. And demanded my money to be returned. We will see.

I literally just got off the phone with both PPP AND TD Bank cus I was also scammed exactly how this person says on here. I actually tried to cancel it as soon as it said I would be charged monthly and it wouldn't work! I called the number and the person on the other end said he could not find me anywhere in the system. I assumed my info had not been saved and went on with my life. Two months later I see two charges for 29.95 each!!! They will be refunding it in "2 business days."

hello this is fraud service be aware they charged me twice in one day

I was SO MAD this morning when I called my mastercard and found out this privacy protection was not with my credit card. I had never noticed it before on my statements until I called my credit card and was told that they had been charging me for 5 months.

After calling the USELESS number on the statement which was (888-999-0535) I read this blog page and saw the CORRECT (1-866-444-1837) and spoke to someone from the states who transferred me to a supervisor because i said I WANT A REFUND RIGHT NOW of all 5 months you have been charging me. So when I spoke to the other supervisor I told her I want a full refund and she said she cannot do that, she can only refund one month and then submit a refund request form (to fuck knows who) and then they will let me know in 3-5 business days.

THIS IS SUCH A SCAM!!! and I feel terrible for those who didnt notice for several months, even years of this.

when i asked what site i "enrolled my membership from" she replied it was "STRATEGICE.CA" and I have never been on that site before and dont even know what the hell it is.

PLEASE BE STERN WHEN YOU CALL, DO NOT LET THEM GET AWAY WITH THIS!!!

I am an Investigator and this was brought to my attention through my sister, as she like most of you, was scammed. And it is clear that is what it is. I am not sure why this has not fallen in the hands of a lawyer along the way with charges of fraud and identity theft. As far as I know, my sister was on a totally different website for different information, at no time was there any indication that Privacy Protection Plus was involved. A few months later she noticed some charges which she did not authorize on her credit card. And again like most, finding someone of intelligence to talk to was a hassle and they were very ignorant. I am personally looking into this and will have no problem taking this as far as it needs to, to stop this exploitation. Good luck everyone.

ARG! This is so frustrating. I just noticed that Privacy Protect (whatever that company even is) has charged me 29.95 for the past 2 months for a serviced I'm not even aware of. I reported this to my credit card company, but as it's the weekend will not likely hear back. I did then phone the 1-888-999-0535 number and ask why I was being charged for this, they then asked for my account number to which I responded heatedly "I don't have one because I don't even know what this so called company is"..... I was promptly transfered to someone else who began asking more questions... whats your last name, firstname, and then she asked for my zipcode (I live in Canada)! She said they will stop beilling me but as for beinng reimbursed it doesn't appear I will. Best of luck to the rest of you.

I was scammed too! took me 3 month to notice it!

they put me on hold for 7minutes before i could speak to someone with a very heavy southern accent.

Please be persistent when you are asking for a refund, they won't give it to you unless you repeatedly ask for it.

yes a total scam. although they did refund my money they claimed it was my fault as I did not see the charges and dispute them right away I obviously knew I was paying them. "privacyprotection" is an intentionally ambiguous title for the charge. these guys are based in Nebraska. total scam and I hope more people check their cards and the banks reveal them as con artists. I was completely upset that TD bank connected me with these guys to dispute the charge and were not already in the know that they were scammers.
